Renewed Mindset – Week 3: Name the Emotion
From the series: Renewed Mindset – A 6-Week Journey from Thought Traps to Truth
Welcome to Week 3
By now, you’ve named a thought trap and traced it back to the situation or trigger that stirred it up. This week, we’re going even deeper…into the emotion underneath the thought.
Thoughts and emotions are intertwined. But while thoughts are often easy to put into words, emotions can feel messy, unclear, or even unsafe to acknowledge. That’s why many of us skip over them. But the truth is, emotions are signals, not enemies. They reveal what matters to us. And when we name them honestly, we can bring them to the Lord for healing and alignment.
Scripture Focus
"Pour out your hearts before Him; God is our refuge." — Psalm 62:8
"Jesus wept." — John 11:35
"Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger." — Ephesians 4:26
Coaching Insight: Emotions Are Invitations
When we avoid emotions, they don’t disappear; they drive our thoughts underground, making them harder to name and harder to renew. But when we name the emotion beneath a thought trap—whether it’s fear, sadness, shame, anger, or disappointment—we step into truth. We move out of self-protection and into God’s presence.
The goal is to acknowledge our thoughts and emotions. This is a moment to drop anchor. The storm does not go away, but when we drop anchor, it starts to lose its power and control over us.
Reflection Prompt:
What emotions were present when your thought trap surfaced?
Can you name one or two clearly?
What happens when you invite God into that emotion instead of avoiding it?

Closing Thought
Emotions are not the enemy of truth. They are the doorway to intimacy with God. When you name your emotion and bring it into the light, you no longer have to fear it. God meets you there with truth, comfort, and clarity.
God isn’t afraid of your emotion. He wants to meet you in it.
Next week, we’ll explore how to break the agreement between the emotion and the lie you’ve believed.
